With a career spanning over four decades, Ben Liebrand has remixed and reworked more than 800 titles, shaping the landscape of dance music. He pioneered the concept of multiple artist megamixes, renowned for their extended durations and meticulous craftsmanship. His annual Grandmixes, initiated in 1983, are celebrated milestones in dance music history, launching the careers of many contemporary DJs.
Liebrand’s impact on the dance music scene is immense, with his solo albums and Grandmix series achieving significant acclaim. He continues to produce groundbreaking analogue and digital releases, each uniquely collectible and influential.
Bootleggers have exploited Ben Liebrand’s GRANDMIXES over the years, cashing in on his work and ultimately pushing him to stop making these iconic mixes. Let’s set the record straight.
The GRANDMIX appeared annually from 1983 to 1992, with a surprise new Grandmix released in December 2023. None of these mixes have been bootlegged or released by Liebrand. The GRANDMIX 88 and 89 were available through DMC, and GRANDMIX 90 was canceled due to changes in British copyright laws. Sony released the GRANDMIXES from 2000 to 2017, which can be ordered legitimately.
Grandmix 1993
Any mixes labeled as GRANDMIXES from 1993 to 1999—such as “Uncle Ben’s” or DJ Bootleg 99—are not Liebrand’s work and are illegal. The only official Grandmix 1993 was created by Ben Liebrand in December 2023.
